Block a customer by name
Updated · 3 min read
Name rules work well on an unusual name and are the most dangerous rule in your blocklist on a common one. A blocked genuine customer does not email you to complain — they assume checkout is broken and buy elsewhere. So run the test below first.
The rarity test, in sixty seconds
Open your Shopify customers list and search the surname, then the full name.
- Go ahead if the full name appears once, and it is the person you want to stop.
- Go ahead if the surname is unusual in your main markets.
- Stop if the surname is common where you sell.
- Stop if you already have good orders under that name.
When a name rule is the right tool
- A named individual you have decided not to serve, who is not hiding.
- A reseller you cut off who keeps ordering at different addresses.
- A rare name reappearing on disputed orders with a new email each time.
- Next to an address rule at a shared building, when you want one resident blocked and not the rest.
Create the rule
- Run the rarity test. If a second person shows up, stop.
- In Chargeback Blacklist, add a rule of type Name and enter the first and last name as they appear on the order.
- Pair it with the address or phone from the same order if there is any doubt.
- Watch the interception log for a week. If it fires on orders that look normal, delete it.
Combine name with address, email, phone, account or tag rules so you stop one person instead of a demographic.
Install Chargeback BlacklistA fake name will not save them
Names are free to invent, so treat a name rule as one layer. The one that does not care what they type is automatic: when a checkout is blocked, the device fingerprint and IP address behind it are banned, so the next attempt fails even under a completely new name, email and phone number.
A name you have never seen before
No name rule helps against someone hitting you for the first time. The community blacklist works on emails and phone numbers reported by other stores, with a threshold you choose, which is the only way to stop a first-time visitor with a long history elsewhere.
If the name is too common
Block the shipping address, the phone number, or use a customer tag that targets the exact customer record rather than a string of text.
Gift orders ship under someone else's name. If your store gets a lot of them, be extra careful with name rules.
FAQ
- Can I block a customer by name on Shopify?
- Yes, with a checkout validation app. You create a rule with the first and last name and checkouts under that exact name are refused before payment. Shopify admin has no equivalent setting.
- Is blocking by name risky?
- It depends on how common the name is. On an unusual full name it is safe. On a common one it will eventually stop a paying customer who simply leaves without telling you.
- What if they type a fake name?
- They often do, which is why a name rule should never be your only layer. The address and phone are much harder to fake when someone wants the parcel delivered.
- How do I know if a name is too common?
- Search it in your own Shopify customer list. If more than one person turns up, block a different field.
