Block a customer by address
Updated · 4 min read
Every other checkout field is a string someone can retype. The address has a physical constraint attached: somebody has to be standing there when the courier arrives. That is why address rules bite hardest on repeat offenders.
Choose which fields must match
A whole-address text match breaks the moment someone writes "Street" instead of "St." Instead you pick the fields that matter, and the checkout is blocked only when all of them match.
| Fields selected | Catches | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Street + ZIP | The same address under a new name, email and phone | Nothing. This is the default recommendation |
| Street + city + ZIP | The same address, matched strictly | A misspelled city means no match |
| ZIP only | Every order into that postcode | Blocks the neighbours. Short-term use only |
| City only | An entire city | The bluntest rule available. Review it weekly |
Create the rule
- Copy the shipping address from the order.
- In Chargeback Blacklist, add a rule and choose Address.
- Tick street and ZIP. Leave the apartment line unticked unless one specific unit is the problem.
- Before saving anything wider than one building, search your Shopify orders for that ZIP. If good customers appear, narrow it.
- Test with a real checkout.

New name, new email, same door
This is the normal pattern: they burn through email addresses and phone numbers, then type the same delivery address again because they want the goods. The address rule catches that. And if they change every identifier at once, the device fingerprint and IP address banned on their first blocked attempt catch the retry instead. Both layers work on the same person from different angles.
Addresses you have not seen yet
Address rules are reactive by nature. To stop someone before they reach your store, the community blacklist checks emails and phone numbers against reports from other merchants, with a threshold you set. Pair it with address rules and you cover both the known door and the unknown shopper.
Reshippers and lockers
A warehouse-style address appearing on disputed orders under different names is usually a freight forwarder. They attract card fraud, and they are also used by ordinary international shoppers. Check how those orders actually performed. If most were fine, block the specific names instead of the address.
Do not block a country with an address rule. Turn the shipping zone off in Shopify instead — cleaner and reversible.
FAQ
- Can I block a shipping address on Shopify?
- Not from Shopify admin. With a checkout validation app you create an address rule and choose which fields must match, for example street and ZIP, and matching checkouts are refused before payment.
- Can I block a whole ZIP code or city?
- Yes, by selecting only that field. It will also stop legitimate customers in the area, so use it only for a concentrated problem and review it after a few weeks.
- What if they change the apartment number?
- Build the rule from the fields that stay constant, usually street and ZIP, and leave the unit line out of the match.
- Billing address or shipping address?
- Shipping. On stolen-card orders the billing address belongs to the victim, so blocking it punishes the wrong person.
