Block customers by customer tag
Updated · 4 min read
Tag blocking flips the model: instead of one rule per person, you create one rule for the tag and grow the blocklist in Shopify admin. Tag someone today and they are blocked at their next checkout, with nothing to configure in the app.
Why merchants switch at around ten customers
| Rule per customer | Tag rule (blacklist) | |
|---|---|---|
| Adding a person | Open the app, create a rule | Tag them blacklist in Shopify admin |
| App setup | Create a rule each time | None — tag is built-in |
| Automation | Manual | Shopify Flow adds the tag on dispute |
| Seeing the list | Inside the app | A Shopify segment filtered by blacklist |
Set it up
The app looks for customers tagged blacklist. That is the tag name, hardcoded. Use it everywhere on your Shopify admin.
- In Customers, select your problem customers and add the
blacklisttag in one bulk action. - The app automatically blocks any customer carrying the
blacklisttag — nothing to configure in Chargeback Blacklist. - In Shopify Flow, add the
blacklisttag when a dispute is created, so the list maintains itself. See the chargeback guide. - Create a customer segment filtered on
blacklist. That segment is now your blocklist, inside Shopify. - Add email and address rules for your worst offenders, since tags do not apply to unmatched guest checkouts.

Every customer you tag blacklist is blocked at checkout, whether you tag them by hand or through Shopify Flow.
Install Chargeback BlacklistWhen a tagged customer checks out as someone new
A tag is tied to a customer record, so a fresh email and a guest checkout can slip past it. Two things catch that. The raw detail rules from step five, and the automatic device ban: once any checkout of theirs is blocked, the device fingerprint and IP address behind it are blocked too, so the next attempt fails regardless of which identifiers they changed.
Untagged people with a history elsewhere
Your tags only describe customers you already know. The community blacklist checks emails and phone numbers against reports from other stores, with a threshold you set, which covers the visitor nobody at your company has tagged yet.
Worth automating
- A dispute is opened.
- An order is cancelled for fraud after your review.
- A third return in ninety days.
- Abuse reported by your support team, tagged by hand with the reason noted.
You can use other tags like watch for suspicions if you want, but the app only blocks the blacklist tag.
FAQ
- How do I block customers by tag on Shopify?
- Install Chargeback Blacklist, then add the tag blacklist to the customers in Shopify admin. Everyone carrying it, now or later, is blocked at checkout. There is no rule to create.
- What tag does the app look for?
- The app blocks any customer carrying the tag blacklist (lowercase, no spaces). Use that tag everywhere in your Shopify admin.
- Does a tag rule cover guest checkouts?
- A tag lives on a customer record, so it applies when the checkout is matched to that customer. Add email, phone and address rules to cover guests.
- Can tagging be automated?
- Yes. Shopify Flow can add the tag when a dispute is created, so the blocklist maintains itself.
