Auto-block customers who already cost you a chargeback
Updated · 4 min read
The first chargeback costs you the goods, the shipping, the payment and a fee. The second one is the avoidable one. This is how to make a past chargeback block the next checkout automatically.
What Shopify can do alone
You can tag the customer and build a Shopify Flow automation that cancels or refunds any new order carrying that tag. It works, but the order was still created, inventory was still held, the customer still got a confirmation email, and the cancellation tells them exactly what happened — which is an invitation to retry with different details.
Blocking at checkout inverts all of that: nothing is created, nothing is charged, nothing is confirmed.
Decide who gets blocked
- Repeat disputes from the same person or address: block.
- "Item not received" on a parcel with delivery confirmation: block after the second one.
- Stolen card fraud: block the shipping address and phone, not the cardholder's email. The cardholder is a victim; the shipping address belongs to the fraudster.
- One dispute from a good customer: fix the underlying problem instead.
The setup
- Use the
blacklisttag. That is the tag the app blocks. Use it for all disputed customers. - Apply it automatically. In Shopify Flow, add the
blacklisttag to the customer when a dispute is created. Or tag by hand when the dispute email lands — it takes thirty seconds. - The app blocks automatically. Every customer carrying the
blacklisttag is blocked at checkout. Nothing to configure in Chargeback Blacklist. Full details in the tag guide. - Add the raw details too. A tag only applies when the checkout matches that customer record, so add the email, phone and address from the disputed order as their own rules. That covers guest checkouts.
- Tag your history. Go back through past disputes and tag everyone involved with
blacklist. The blocking is already live.
Tag the customer once and the checkout rule handles every attempt after that. Blocked attempts are logged with the estimated value of what you kept.
Install Chargeback BlacklistWhen they come back with a new email
Someone who successfully took money back from you tends to return, because it worked. The first blocked attempt bans the device fingerprint and IP address behind it, so the follow-up with a fresh email and a fake name fails too. They would need a different browser or device, a different network and a different delivery address in the same session.
Getting ahead of the first chargeback
Everything above is reactive: it needs a dispute to have already hit you. The community blacklist checks emails and phone numbers reported by other stores, with a threshold you set for how many reports are needed. It is the only layer that can stop a serial chargebacker before they cost you anything.
Blocking does not affect a dispute already in progress. That one is still decided by the evidence you send the bank.
FAQ
- Can Shopify block a customer automatically after a chargeback?
- Shopify Flow can tag the customer and cancel their future orders after they are placed. It cannot stop the checkout itself. Blocking before payment needs a checkout validation app.
- Should I block after a single chargeback?
- Block on repeat disputes, on clear fraud signals, or when you never want that customer back. A one-off dispute from a long-standing customer is usually a service problem instead.
- Does blocking help me win the dispute I already have?
- No. The open dispute is decided by the evidence you submit to the bank. Blocking is about the next attempt.
- Can I load my past chargeback customers in bulk?
- Yes. Tag them all with blacklist in Shopify, or use bulk import on the higher plans to add their emails and phone numbers directly.
